The air in the laundry room was heavy with the scent of bleach and damp fabric. Emily stared at the phone. Her daughter's digital shadow. The details were a confusing jumble, alien to her. She felt like she was standing on the precipice of something frightening, something that she couldn't understand.

Her leg bounced incessantly, a nervous rhythm. She ran a hand through her hair, the simple gesture failing to quell the growing panic. She felt a burning sensation in her chest, like someone had lit a fire inside her.
